Chapter 8

Patrick Bratton Class time Online
Author: Sara Baase
Date of Publication: 2008
Book: A Gift of Fire
Sections read: Chapter 8

1. (Questioning) After reading this chapter/article what questions do I have?
Have any of my accounts seen computer errors?

2. (Knowledge) Tell three interesting elements of this chapter:
A. If computer errors occur within law enforcement people are subject to arrest or otherwise.
B. Therac-25 incidents show that many factors contributed to the injuries and death (pg. 425)
C. There are several ways to categorize computer errors such as the serious of the effect or cause.

3. (Comprehension) Summarize what is being discussed within this chapter?
Chapter 8 mainly talks about the mistakes computers make, and when mistakes are made they may affect people. Failures and Errors in Computer Systems. People have been billed money and people have lost their assets due to computer error and glitches.

4. (Application)Name a specific example or NEW solution for this type of problem/similar situation in society or that you have experienced – BE SPECIFIC AND EXPLAIN?
A specific example I can remember is when I signed up for Time Warner Cable’s Road Runner service. At the time there was a low price for 12 months to start out then after the 12 months it would increase to its regular price. Well after the first month I noticed I was billed full price when I was supposed to be locked in for the 12 month lower price. The rep didn’t know what happened but changed my bill and I had no problems since. This was obviously a computer error.

5. (Analysis) Address ANY that apply. How can you compare one of the situations in this chapter to something that does not relate to computers, technology, or the Internet? Be sure to reference the chapter and your solution. What ideas NEW can you add to the issue that is being presented within the reading?
I can compare this to something that does not relate to computers, technology or the Internet by saying that when people fill out their tax forms or have someone complete them, sometimes there are errors and people are either owed money, or owe money due to a miscalculation.

6. (Synthesis) Address all that apply. Do you agree with what is being said within the article (Why/Why not? Back up with FACTS, reference)?
Yes I do agree with what is being said in the reading. Computers are known for making errors especially when it’s dealing with billing information, I know this from experience. People dispute their bills all the time and I feel that people such because computers are not perfect.

7. (Evaluation) Address all that apply. Judge whether or not this topic is relevant in today’s society? Are there any ethical considerations (see Chap1-1.4 for exp of Ethics)? What new ideas will you make after reading this chapter/article?

After reading this chapter I became more aware that computers make errors on a daily basis. I used to think it was once in a while but now I know that if something seems unusual with anything such as a billing statement to not get upset about it, it might be a computer error.

8. (Conclusion) after completing this assignment, based on new thoughts and evidence
a. What new conclusions have you come to about this topic?
I feel people need to be aware of computer glitches and to check anything they have on file that is computer related, which now in society is basically everything.

b. Below restate your questions from #1 and include the answer based on your new conclusions.
Has any of my accounts come up with bank errors? I’m not sure but to make sure I will make sure to keep up with my statements because computers have a chance for errors

Chapter 5

Name Patrick Bratton Class time: Online

Author: Sara Baase
Date of Publication: 2008
Book: A Gift of Fire
Sections read: Chapter 5

1. (Questioning) After reading this chapter/article what questions do I have?
With websites that claim to protect your identity, will people’s information ever be protected off of the Internet?

2. (Knowledge) Tell three interesting elements of this chapter:

People create fake websites to obtain information.
Hackers changed the CIA website to “Central Stupidity Agency”
Hacking was originally “creative programming” with people writing very elegant or clever programs.

3. (Comprehension) Summarize what is being discussed within this chapter?
Hacking, crime, viruses, identity theft and pharming are some of the main topics discussed within this chapter. Identity theft is easily obtained when someone enters their information into a deceiving website. Crimes committed online are harder to catch then those offline.

4. (Application) Name a specific example or NEW solution for this type of problem/similar situation in society or that you have experienced – be specific and explain?

I noticed that on Facebook, sometimes people profiles are hacked. You notice this when you see random posts on the wall telling you to click on this link and if you do; you too will automatically start posting fake links for more people accounts to be hacked. The good thing about this is that all you have to do is change your password and then you’re good again.

5. (Analysis) Address ANY that apply. How can you compare one of the situations in this chapter to something that does not relate to computers, technology, or the Internet? Be sure to reference the chapter and your solution. What ideas NEW can you add to the issue that is being presented within the reading?

I can relate this to a B2B type of business. People within this business go house to house knocking on doors trying to sell a product. I feel this may be an easy way to deceive people because if someone was walking around selling a product and stated they needed your information, those who fell into the trap may be in jeopardy of identity theft. People need to be aware of the things they sign up for and never ever give out their social security unless what they are signing up for is legit. People need to ask questions and check the terms of agreement before signing on the dotted line.

6. (Synthesis) Address all that apply. Do you agree with what is being said within the article (Why/Why not? Back up with FACTS, reference)?

I agree with what is being said within the chapter. At first, hackers programmed creatively, but now within this generation hacking seems to be “cool” because now hacking is easily done and the information to hack can be easily obtained online. Hackers can create viruses and spyware to obtain information with ease.

7. (Evaluation) Address all that apply. Judge whether or not this topic is relevant in today’s society? Are there any ethical considerations (see Chap1-1.4 for exp of Ethics)? What new ideas will you make after reading this chapter/article?
This topic is definitely relevant in society today! People and companies are hacked all the time. One major hack that happened back in April was the hacking of the PlayStation Network! Millions of data and credit card information was claimed to be obtained. With that type of information people accounts may be wiped out, and email addresses might be sold which brings spam into people’s email. People information is bought and obtained online daily and I feel that people need to really to start taking notice to their accounts and make sure nothing is happening to their identities.

8. (Conclusion) after completing this assignment, based on new thoughts and evidence
what new conclusions have you come to about this topic?

Will people information be protected off of the Internet? NO! If hackers can hack into the CIA I feel that if someone wanted information bad enough and was a professional hacker than they will obtain that information. And I do not feel websites that claim they will protect your information can protect it as they say because I remember the guy who was showing his social security for life lock on the TV got his information hacked.

RiP A Remix Manifesto

Your Name Patrick Bratton Class time: Online

Name of Movie: Rip: A remix manifesto
Year: 2008
Producers: Daniel Cross, Mila Aung Thwin, Ravida Din, Sally Bochner

Your questions after watching the film:

 Will piracy ever be stopped?
 Why do you hear mostly companies complaining about piracy rather than artist?
 Will companies eventually just give up on trying to stop piracy?

1. There are 6 characters in this film. Name 3 of these people, and why they are included in the film (who they are). How do they relate to the overall theme of the film (Knowledge):
a. Dan O’Neill, a cartoonist and founder of Air Pirates, a group sued by the Walt Disney Company for copyright infringement.
b. Jammie Thomas, single mom sued by Recording Industry Association of America for $222,220 for uploading 24 songs to the now shut down Kazaa file-sharing network.
c. Lawrence Lessig, political activist and a professor at Stanford Law School, wants to have reduced legal restrictions in technological applications.

2. Who is Gregg Gillis? What is Girltalk? What are the main ideas being discussed within this movie? (Comprehension)

Gregg Gillis is a remixing musician, preferably a DJ, that is in the band Girltalk. The main ideas being discussed are that it is perfectly fine to remix someone else’s music to create a new song. Gregg Gillis supports that idea.

3. What is ReMixing? Specifically, why does narrator Brett Gaylor say that the computer is Gregg Gillis’ instrument. Explain what it does and how this technologic advancement is changing music. (Comprehension)

ReMixing is taking someone’s original song, creating mash ups with notes cut up and rearranged to make new songs. The computer is Gregg Gillis’ instrument because he creates the mash ups on it with ease. This is changing music because a person can take an original song and create a completely new song with the lyrics and notes.

4. Based on the main point off this film, where do you see connections to your experiences, society, or what you’ve read in the book/watched on Angel– BE SPECIFIC (Application)?

Based off my experience I have seen the remixing of music almost on a daily basis. There are remixes on the radio, TV and the clubs. I am a rap fan and I’ve noticed a large amount of songs being sampled from old songs so remixing and sampling is definitely in the mainstream.

5. Analyze what you’ve watched. What is the future of distribution, production and creativity of music? (Analysis)

The future of the distribution, production and creativity of music looks promising for the future. I honestly do not see anything changing because companies continuing to lose money. I feel that people who remix, and piracy is never going anywhere and there will never be a mutual agreement between pirates and companies. People can already download music fast today but in the future it will be with a snap of a finger, I think it may get that fast one day and creativity will never die because people love to create never music.

6. Do you think that remixing is stealing someone’s Intellectual Property? Why or why not? (Analysis)?

I do not think remixing is stealing someone’s Intellectual Property. I understand that to remix you have to take someone’s original song and alter it but remixing is not easy. I have tried to remix songs before, it takes creativity. With that said I believe the remixing then becomes your work, people will obviously know you remixed an original song but you don’t get respect for that, you get respect for the remix.

7. How will the issues of copyright and Intellectual property affect the world in 10 years? BE SPECIFIC SITE OUTSIDE SOURCES (SYNTHESIS)

I feel that in 10 years people will continue to download music just as they do today. I do not seeing copyright laws taking full effect on society because how can you enforce that without doing something unethical like requiring people to put a computer chip on their computer monitoring their activity.

8. Do you agree with what is being said within movie? What shifts in your opinion on this topic have happened from watching this film? What new ideas have you created after watching and thinking about this film? (Evaluation)

I do agree with what is being said in the movie. I feel people should be allowed to remix music as much as they want to. By watching the movie you see how the music brought people together and everyone was having a good time. That is important to me because it is reality, music does bring people together and I feel copyright laws and major companies just need to back off because the piracy of music and the remixing of it is not going anywhere and I truly believe it never will.

State your original questions and answer them below:
 NO! I do not feel that piracy will be stopped. I don’t care how much they try to scare people with their copyright laws, people will continue to download and remix music.
 I feel that artist don’t complain as much because they may see it as a sign of respect for their music. And they are compensated with a contract anyway, so the selling of their music will basically be like commission not only that but musicians know they have fans out there who see them as their favorite and will buy their music. At the end of the day, they are still rich. It is the companies who are money hungry.
 I feel that companies may never actually give up in the fight to stop piracy but just slowly stop complaining about it and let it go because they truly know they will never be able to stop it.

Identity Theft

During the identity theft assessment I received a 48. I know that we are to assume that everyone is a good person deep down and have good intentions but when it comes to my identity while involving money I am very cautious. Some of the things I do on a daily basis are checking my statements, keeping my anti-virus software up to date, as well as ask THOROUGH questions to ANYONE who may ask or need my social security.

Steal This Film II

Your Name Patrick Bratton Class time:Online
SHOULD BE NO LONGER THAN 2 PAGES

Name of Movie: Steal this Film
Year: 2006
Producers: The Pirate Bay

Who is the Pirate Bay? What do they stand for? What is their mission?

1. Name, and define, 3 significant people interviewed in the movie (Knowledge):
a. Fredrik Neij
b. Gottfrid Svartholm
c. Peter Sunde (all three contributed to the creations of the Pirate Bay

2. What are the main ideas being discussed within this movie? (Comprehension)

What is being discussed in this movie is the illegal activity of pirating movies, movies…etc... Online and how the Pirate Bay members believe in freedom of speech and feel that online piracy is no different from people putting copyrighted materials on Google.

3. What is BitTorrent? Explain what it does and how this technologic advancement had changed society. (Comprehension)

BitTorrent is a P2P application. Peer-to-peer applications allow people to upload a file and share it among the community. This is a technologic advancement in society because people can download files for free online as long as their available, meaning people are saving money but companies are losing money.

4. Based on the main point off this film (If you don’t understand read: http://stealthisfilm.com/Part2/). Where do you see connections to your experiences,and/or society at large– BE SPECIFIC (Application)?

Society at a large will never stop pirating music. On the site “http://stealthisfilm.com/Part2/” It sarcastically states “the 'battles' between old and new modes of distribution, between the pirate and the institution of copyright, seem to many of us already lost and won. We know who the victors are. Why then say any more?” That proves that as long as people who are in control of P2P software are not budding when the law interferes than neither are the so called pirates.

5. Analyze what you’ve watched. What is the future of distribution, production and creativity? Has society achieved its main goal in relation to Intellectually Property? (Analysis)

The future of distribution, production and creativity will continue. Just because people download music for free there will always be those who still pay for it as well as go to the movies which are expensive today. In my opinion industries as well as their artists, actors and their crews will continue to make money. People download music and movies to save money, the people who create the intellectual property are already rich so in my opinion, who cares if they are offended because at the end of the day they will continue to be rich.

6. Do you think that downloading is stealing someone’s Intellectual Property? Why or why not? (Analysis)?

No I do not. How often do you hear of musicians or actors rebel or set up campaigns against piracy? Not much, it is the big companies who pay the musicians that are making a big deal about it. If I were to pirate music and never once hear my favorite musician say, “don’t download you stealing MY music” Then I don’t consider it stealing. Musicians and actors have contracts so at the end of the day their going to get paid anyway. And P2P- means peer-to-peer, which is file sharing. Files are online being shared.

7. How will the issues of copyright and Intellectual property affect the world in 50 years? BE SPECIFIC (SYNTHESIS)

Putting a file on the Internet is like a virus, it can spread any, and everywhere. I don’t think that in 50 years piracy will be controlled. They can enforce all the laws they want but there will always be people who break them.

8. Do you agree with what is being said within movie? What shifts in your opinion on this topic have happened from watching this film? What new ideas have you created after watching and thinking about this film? (Evaluation)

I agree with the Pirate Bay, I don’t see how downloading music is any different from putting copyrighted material online through Google. I feel the Pirate Bay gives off the impression to be a revolutionary group that condones P2P sharing and I feel their doing a good job. Piracy will never go away.

Prep for Chapter 4

After watching "A discussion of the music wars on the Internet". What is Chuck D's point of view on Intellectual property? What is Lars? How are the different? What's the critical point here?
After watching “A discussion of the music wars on the Internet,” Chuck D is a part of the political rap group known as public enemy and Lars is from the rock back Metallica, these two groups are well known. Chuck D believes in musical freedom and had no problem with people getting music for free. Lars believes that those who create music, which is their intellectual property should be compensated for their efforts. He does not believe people should be able to get free music. Even though these two had different points of views, they agreed that this can increase your fan base. Between these two musicians the main critical point here is that no matter how hard companies or musicians may try to stop the piracy of music, it will never be stopped, and it can’t be stopped. A small few like we have seen in the past may be punished will millions of people will continue despite what the law says.

Specifically, what is the argument made in this audio segment? How is it different from the above videos? Incorporate and cite information from Laura Sydel in your answer.
In this segment, it is about people who create music but are not being paid for it because with the advances in technology i.e. the Internet, music is readily available for piracy at any time leading music companies to lose millions of dollars because people prefer free, over having to pay a price. Laura Sydel mentions how CD sales have gone down in the past 10 years. In this segment she mentions how eventually there will be no more artist because there will be no selling of their music and without their music being sold they will eventually not make any money.
Why is what Eric Schmidt said important?
I agree with what Eric Schmidt had to say. People do have good intentions but with new technology some people will want to download for free and some will pay a small price for it. An example of this would be Rhapsody or iTunes. People will buy from their favorite’s artist online. I feel like musicians may try harder to be the best musician they can be, because people pay for their favorite artist music to support them, but all others they will just download.

Chapter 3

Name Patrick Bratton Class time: Online

Author: Sara Baase
Date of Publication: 2008
Book: A Gift of Fire
Sections read: Chapter

1. (Questioning) After reading this chapter/article what questions do I have?

Will America ever enforce strict Internet laws that provide censorship on a great deal online, such as the countries of Saudi Arabia and China?

2. (Knowledge) Tell three interesting elements of this chapter:

a. “Cigarette ads are legal in magazines, but banned from radio, television, and all electronic media under the control of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). (pg. 146)
b. “The First Amendment is a restriction on the power of government, not individuals or private businesses.” (pg. 148)
c. “In the Communications Decency Act and the censorship laws that followed, Congress attempted to avoid an obvious conflict with the First Amendment by focusing on children.” (pg. 152)

3. (Comprehension) Summarize what is being discussed within this chapter?

Chapter 3 is about the freedom of speech online. There are exceptions though to what can be said and presented online due to protection acts for example “In the Communications Decency Act and the censorship laws that followed, Congress attempted to avoid an obvious conflict with the First Amendment by focusing on children.” (pg. 152) With that said, the protection of children because essential. “Another provision of COPA set up the Child Online Protection Commission to study and report on ways to protect children. The commission included representatives from family organizations, government, universities and industry.” (pg. 154)

4. (Application) Name a specific example or NEW solution for this type of problem/similar situation in society or that you have experienced – be specific and explain?

A similar experience I remember is when I was in high school. I remember trying to access sites such as MySpace but I couldn’t because the school had blocked s bunch of specific sites that they felt weren’t “educational.” There were ways around this though; the administrator password from a teacher was floating around school which allowed us access to any website we wanted. Since schools participate in federal programs they are about of the Children's Internet Protection Act of 2000 (CIPA).

5. (Analysis) Address ANY that apply. How can you compare one of the situations in this chapter to something that does not relate to computers, technology, or the Internet? Be sure to reference the chapter and your solution. What ideas NEW can you add to the issue that is being presented within the reading?

Certain countries in this world have types of cultures that require men or women to dress a certain way. Muslim women mostly wear the hijab on their head in a sense to “block their beauty” so you can focus more on their personality than their looks. In America, the culture is different and people can basically wear whatever they please as long as it isn’t offensive or provocative.

6. (Synthesis) Address all that apply. Do you agree with what is being said within the article (Why/Why not? Back up with FACTS, reference)?
Yes I do agree with what is being said in this chapter. I feel that COPA (Child Online Protection Act) is great from the Internet because it makes sure sites are restricted to children. But in a way I feel this doesn’t fully protect children because restricted sites state in the front page the material that is presented on the site and you have to agree or disagree to accept the terms and conditions, mostly being over the age of 18. I feel that children under 18 can easily get into restricted sites still. So although I agree with the things said in this chapter I still feel that children are fully protected.

7. (Evaluation) Address all that apply. Judge whether or not this topic is relevant in today’s society? Are there any ethical considerations (see Chap1-1.4 for exp of Ethics)? What new ideas will you make after reading this chapter/article?
This topic is relevant in today’s society. People who do illegal activities are now punished. An example of illegal activities are child pornography, which is not a part of freedom of speech.

8. (Conclusion) After completing this assignment, based on new thoughts and evidence
What new conclusions have you come to about this topic?

a. I actually feel when Congress attempted to avoid conflict with the First Amendment that they were right for their actions because through their actions child pornography became illegal.
b. Since America is the land of Democracy, I feel that the Internet would never be strictly censored to the point of such countries as Saudi Arabia and China. Not only that but there was already situations in the past in which people thought their rights of freedom of speech were being violated, so I feel we have already come so far with trying to censorship sites to protect children.

Chapter 2 Part 2

The name of my video is called “Big Brother Preamble.” This video is about our privacy being invaded on a daily basis, such as with searches on the internet rather it be transactions, purchases or religion, and it also explains how we are constantly watched. Personal information is collected every day and all Internet action is being recorded, employees and consumers are constantly watched and traffic is being monitored at all times. The government is working with companies for new advances in technology, with video surveillance and with increased security and surveillance comes decreased privacy. “With these type of advances we don’t know who has access to any or our data or if it’s even protected. “Once high-tech devices and systems are in place and laws allow more intrusive surveillance and data access by government agencies to find terrorists, will we be able to remove these threats to privacy and freedom after the threat recedes?” (pg. 66) I feel this a strong statement because we are constantly improving our technology to fight off terrorism but when it recedes will the government use their new technology on the population? All we can truly do is hope for the best.

Book: A Gift of Fire
Sections read: Chapter 2.1-2.2, 2. 3.2, 23.6, 2.4.2, 2.5.3, 2.5.4

1. (Questioning) After reading this chapter/article what questions do I have?

The question I have are should the government be allowed to basically do whatever they please online and retain any information they want?

2. (Knowledge) Tell three interesting elements of this chapter:

a. How the government bypasses the Fourth Amendment; i.e. Olmstead v. United States and Kyllo v. United States (pg70-71)
b. When someone joins, subscribers to, or registers with a company (such as AOL or MySpace0, they are accepting the company’s policy on privacy and information sharing as part of the agreement.” (pg56)
c. Internet service providers (ISPs) and Web sites can invisibly collect such details of our online activities as where we went, what we did, what browser we use, and how long we stayed at a particular page. Even when we know that Websites can collect such information, we often are not aware of just what information a particular site is collecting. (pg51)

3. (Comprehension) Summarize what is being discussed within this chapter?

The chapter focuses on privacy. Baase, states three key aspects of privacy which are “freedom of intrusion- being left alone, control of information about oneself and freedom from surveillance. (pg. 45) With that said one is would be safe from intrusion but with the popularity of social networking sites people are literally handing over their personal information and placing it online for the public to view. Not only that but information we give out online is gathered, rather it be by cookies or invisible information gathering. In a sense, privacy seems to be ignored because within the chapter it states, “We store our photos and videos, fill out or tax forms, and create and store documents and financial spreadsheets on Websites instead of on our own computer. These services have benefits, of course, but they expose us to increased privacy risk. (pg. 48)

4. (Application) Name a specific example or NEW solution for this type of problem/similar situation in society or that you have experienced – be specific and explain?
A specific example that has recently affected millions including myself was the PlayStation Network being hacked. “At the end of April, Sony said its PlayStation Network, which allows play and communication online with other users, was hacked, with more than 75 million accounts stolen.” (http://adage.com/article/news/sony-sustained-brand-damage-hackings/228091/) I have a PSN (PlayStation Network Account) and had to check my financial records to make sure everything was safe and secure. Not only that I changing my checking account and transferred my money into it. To order things online you have to willing give up your information. I’m not sure if it’s in the user agreements (which I honestly might go back in to check) but I think in the privacy agreements it should state if any information is stolen from hackers and one’s money is depleted out of their account, they should be reimbursed. Sony is a major company and I feel there should be no excuses to being hacked. I’m just glad nothing was stolen from me.

5. (Analysis) Address ANY that apply. How can you compare one of the situations in this chapter to something that does not relate to computers, technology, or the Internet? Be sure to reference the chapter and your solution. What ideas NEW can you add to the issue that is being presented within the reading?
I feel that the use of Satellite is an invasion to all of our privacy as a whole. The public can easily log on to Google Satellite and lookup the location of where a person lives. Not only that but it gives you the street view, how the house looks as well as the surrounding area. “The software has been criticized by a number of special interests groups, including national officials, as being an invasion of privacy and even posing a threat to national security.” (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Google_Earth#Controversy_and_criticism)”

6. (Synthesis) Address all that apply. Do you agree with what is being said within the article (Why/Why not? Back up with FACTS, reference)?

I agree with the chapter. I feel people need to realize and be aware of the type of information they place on the Internet and use CAUTION. Data and information is constantly saved online and I feel as if so many few just do not realize this, or just don’t care until there is a leak in the system and information is stolen. “People often are not aware that information about them and their activities is being collected and saved.” (pg. 50)

7. (Evaluation) Address all that apply. Judge whether or not this topic is relevant in today’s society? Are there any ethical considerations (see Chap1-1.4 for exp of Ethics)? What new ideas will you make after reading this chapter/article?

This topic is definitely relevant in today’s society! All the information we put on the Internet is stored somewhere and is truly never gone. People have to be aware how vital it is to be aware of what information you put online. “When someone joins, subscribers to, or registers with a company (such as AOL or MySpace0, they are accepting the company’s policy on privacy and information sharing as part of the agreement.”(pg56) I feel everyone doesn’t read the fine print, or just doesn’t care about their privacy anymore because we give it away so freely, that is until something unfortunate happens.

8. (Conclusion) After completing this assignment, based on new thoughts and evidence

a. What new conclusions have you come to about this topic?
After reading this chapter it basically reminded me about things that I already know about such as cookies, or websites gathering information. One thing I will take from this chapter is when I sign up for something online, I usually don’t read the agreements but I will give it a quick look at least to see what I am signing up for. “Technology giveth and technology taketh away.” (http://www.mat.upm.es/~jcm/neil-postman--five-things.html) Technology is innovating, it gives us an infinite amount of information and it allows us to reconnect with friends. Technology so as the Internet after reading this chapter seems to never fully be private because no matter what you do, some type of information will be stored.

b. Below restate your questions from #1 and include the answer based on your new conclusions.
Should the government be allowed to retain any information they want? After reading the chapter I feel the government she be allowed to get any information they need if it pertains to any type of illegal activity. “The USA PATRIOT Act lets the government collect information from financial institutions on any transaction that differ from customer’s usual pattern” (pg.61) Situation like that are perfectly fine with me, but I also feel we need to take the perspective of former Supreme Court Justice William O. Douglas “about the potential abuse from government access” (pg. 61)

Gift Of Fire Chapter 1

Name Patrick Bratton Class time: Online

Author: Sara Baase
Date of Publication: 2008
Book: A Gift of Fire
Sections read: Chapter

1. (Questioning) After reading this chapter/article what questions do I have?

In the New Developments part of the chapter, it states “biological and computer sciences will combine new ways to insert microprocessors or controlled devices on human bodies.” (pg. 5) Is this ethical?

2. (Knowledge)Tell three interesting elements of this chapter:
a. 1940s- The first computer is built
b. 1991- Space shuttle had a one-megahertz computer
c. 2006 Automobiles can have 100-megahertz
computers.
3. (Comprehension) Summarize what is being discussed within this chapter?

The chapter is basically about the changes in technology and how it affects society ethically. Technology has had a major impact in society, rather it be positive or negative. With the theory of ethics though, we are to assume people will do the right thing with the advances of technology but when it comes down to it there are rational and irrational people in this world.

4. (Application)Name a specific example or NEW solution for this type of problem/similar situation in society or that you have experienced – be specific and explain?

A specific example would be social networking sites. When facebook and myspace came out I was hooked. It was like a new world, you could catch up with friends, message them or even talk to people from different states or across the world. Meeting people never became so easy until social networking sites were created.

5. (Analysis) Address ANY that apply. How can you compare one of the situations in this chapter to something that does not relate to computers, technology, or the Internet? Be sure to reference the chapter and your solution. What ideas NEW can you add to the issue that is being presented within the reading?

During the issues and themes part of the chapter, Baase, mentions the loss of privacy and crime (pg.21-25) I feel that social networking sites play a role in this and not only do they play a role but there is evidence that social networking site can lead to crime. The craiglist killer placed online ads on craiglist for erotic services and killed his victims. Social networking sites give people the opportunity to disguise themselves and become anybody they want because it is behind a computer screen. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Philip_Markoff) A new idea I would issue to help out the problem is that social networking sites offer an option for relationships made on their site, so we can have statistics of people who are successful in their relationships and even those who are unsuccessful or unfortunately murder.

6. (Synthesis) Address all that apply. Do you agree with what is being said within the article (Why/Why not? Back up with FACTS, reference)? +

I do agree with what is being said. “Free stuff on the web: email, books, newspapers. Games, etc.” (pg 4-5) With these it is convenient to read books, email people without sending it in an envelop and place games. With this all said, I feel that the environment is affected positively because the Internet saves gas, and with gas being saved means less pollution depleting our ozone.

7. (Evaluation) Address all that apply. Judge whether or not this topic is relevant in today’s society? Are there any ethical considerations (see Chap1-1.4 for exp of Ethics) ? What new ideas will you make after reading this chapter/article?

This topic is relevant in today's society. Technology changes by the day and so many people are left behind and may not keep up with it. People within my age group are apart of the technology movement and are somewhat computer savvy and deal heavily with electronics, but when you look at our parents and those before them, technology seems to be so advanced that they don't want to keep up with it and they let it pass them by. “In 2006, pocket devices hold a terabyte (one trillion bytes) of data.” (Gift of Fire pg. 2) With this said, adults and most elderly today might have a hard time operating a smart phone, I would probably not know what a terabyte even is.

8. (Conclusion) After completing this assignment, based on new thoughts and evidence
a. What new conclusions have you come to about this topic ?
Technology will never be stopped, it is constantly evolving day by day. It is fascinating to see how far we have come from the 1940's, to 2011. That is a short time period. But with the advances in technology comes ethical decisions.
b. Below restate your questions from #1 and include the answer based on your new conclusions.
In the chapter it states “biological and computer sciences will combine new ways to insert microprocessors or controlled devices on human bodies.” I wanted to know if this was ethical, because when I think of controlled devices I think of arms, legs, or even our brains and after reading the chapter I feel there is no simple yes or no answer to this question. It will all be based upon a person's ethics and morals to decide what is right from wrong. As Neil Postman states, “Good and evil rests entirely on human awareness.” (http://www.mat.upm.es/~jcm/neil-postman--five-things.html)

Sections read: Five Things We Need to Know About Technological Change

  1. (Questioning) After reading this chapter/article what questions do I have?

Will technology destroy us all as a race?

  1. (Knowledge)Tell three interesting elements of this chapter:
    1. The computer person values information, not knowledge, certainly not wisdom.
    2. For every advantage a new technology offers, there is always a correspond disadvantage.
    3. The advantage and disadvantages of new technologies are never distributed evenly among the population.

  1. (Comprehension) Summarize what is being discussed within this chapter?

This chapter is about Neil Postman's five ideas about Technological change. First, that we always pay a price for technology; the greater the technology, the greater the price. Second, that there are always winners and losers, and that the winners always try to persuade the losers that they are really winners. Third, that there is embedded in every great technology an epistemological, political or social prejudice. Fourth, technological change is not additive; it is ecological, which means, it changes everything and is, therefore, too important to be left entirely in the hands of Bill Gates. And fifth, technology tends to become mythic; that is, perceived as part of the natural order of things, and therefore tends to control more of our lives than is good for us.

  1. (Application)Name a specific example or NEW solution for this type of problem/similar situation in society or that you have experienced – be specific and explain?

A specific example is online gaming. Online gaming is very popular in today's day and age, with age ranging from 13 and up. The problem today is that online gaming can, in certain cases control one's future. A majority of online players are in high school and college, when a big game title such as Call of Duty is released around exam time, players are eager to play their video games, leading to a lack in their studies. People may still pass their exams and school work but with online gaming they may not be unlocking their full potential to get good grades.

  1. (Analysis) Address ANY that apply. How can you compare one of the situations in this chapter to something that does not relate to computers, technology, or the Internet? Be sure to reference the chapter and your solution. What ideas NEW can you add to the issue that is being presented within the reading?

An idea I would address is advances in medicine. People can take medicine as intended or they can abuse it. And example would be lower tabs. Lower tabs are usually issued to patients after some type of medical procedure or otherwise, an excruciating amount of body pain. With the effects of lower tabs often being positive, relieving people of pain people sometimes get hooked and start taking them for minor aches and pains to the point to where their addicted. There are some that are benefited, some are harmed and some not affected at all.

  1. (Synthesis) Address all that apply. Do you agree with what is being said within the article (Why/Why not? Back up with FACTS, reference)?

Yes I do agree what is in this article. Because I do believe technology tends to control more of our lives than is good for us.

  1. (Evaluation) Address all that apply. Judge whether or not this topic is relevant in today’s society? Are there any ethical considerations (see Chap1-1.4 for exp of Ethics) ? What new ideas will you make after reading this chapter/article?

Since there are advances in technology that can be seen everyday, I feel that this chapter and topic is actually relevant in society. With advances in the technology their will be disadvantages. An example are factories completely controlled by generated machines, leaving millions of people out of work due to machines not needing a weekly pay check but doing the equal work of manual labor. Millions would be affected, while a slight few such as the short staff of people engineering the machines would be affected.

  1. (Conclusion) After completing this assignment, based on new thoughts and evidence
    1. What new conclusions have you come to about this topic ?
    2. Below restate your questions from #1 and include the answer based on your new conclusions.

a. My conclusion about this topic is that I never really thought about how with advances in technology also brings disadvantages. I keep going on with this because it has truly intrigued me because it is so true and now I feel as if I will pay more attention to what new technology brings and who it affects positively but also negatively.

b. Will technology destroy us all as a race? I wasn't sure about this within the chapter until I went back and re-examined the fifth idea Neil Postman stated. “The best way to view technology is as a strange intruder, to remember that technology is not part of God's plan but a product of human creativity and hubris, and that its capacity for good or evil rests entirely on human awareness of what it does for us and to us.” That is a powerful statement and one I feel is true because if we were to ever be destroyed by technology it would not be the technology itself that would destroy us, but the man behind it.

Critical thinking v Critical Reading

  1. (Questioning) After reading this chapter/article what questions do I have?
By reading this chapter the question I have is should I analyze my reading more intensely now, and question everything I read to be the truth, while giving it the possibility to be false?

  1. (Knowledge)Tell three interesting elements of this chapter:
    1. Critical reading is a technique for discovering
    2. Critical thinking is a technique for evaluating
    3. Critical reading refers to a careful, active, reflective, and analytic reading. Critical thinking involves reflecting on the validity of what you have read insight of our prior knowledge and understanding of the world.
  1. (Comprehension) Summarize what is being discussed within this chapter?
This chapter talks about critical thinking v. critical reading. This chapter explains two different techniques of understanding words within a text.  As we read through a text, our brain processes the reading and we begin to understand what is real and not.
  1. (Application)Name a specific example or NEW solution for this type of problem/similar situation in society or that you have experienced – be specific and explain?
A specific example or new solution for this type of problem would be ABC/Spell-check. With the click of a button we can correct our grammatical errors, not only on a computer but also while texting on a cell phone. I feel that rereading material more than once will gives us a better understand of it because we are reanalyzing it.

  1. (Analysis) Address ANY that apply. How can you compare one of the situations in this chapter to something that does not relate to computers, technology, or the Internet? Be sure to reference the chapter and your solution. What ideas NEW can you add to the issue that is being presented within the reading?

I feel that people with strong accents in different countries may have a hard time adjusting their accent to be understood. Such as people migrating to America. When a person has a strong accent and speaks English, at first it may be hard to understand by our brains deciphers their statements and makes sense out of them.

  1. (Synthesis) Address all that apply. Do you agree with what is being said within the article (Why/Why not? Back up with FACTS, reference)?
I agree with what is being said because after each word we read in a text we break it down and begin to understand it and then familiarize our self with it.

We can think of a writer as having taken on a job.  No matter what the topic, certain tasks must be done:
  • a specific topic must be addressed
  • terms must be clearly defined
  • evidence must be presented
  • common knowledge must be accounted for
  • exceptions must be explained
  • causes must be shown to precede effects and to be capable of the effect
  • conclusions must be shown to follow logically from earlier arguments and evidence '
This is basically a setup for how a text should be written and I completely agree with the formation of the bullets listed.

  1. (Evaluation) Address all that apply. Judge whether or not this topic is relevant in today’s society? Are there any ethical considerations (see Chap1-1.4 for exp of Ethics) ? What new ideas will you make after reading this chapter/article?
This article is relevant in today’s society. After reading this article I begin to notice two different ways in reading and analyzing material within a text. I believe I will take with me from this article a sense of more in-depth reading, rereading things I feel may be false and question certain materials I read with subjectivity

  1. (Conclusion) After completing this assignment, based on new thoughts and evidence
    1. What new conclusions have you come to about this topic ?
I believe that critical thinking and critical reading are two completely different styles of reading.
    2. Below restate your questions from #1 and include the answer based on your new conclusions.
After reading this chapter I believe that it is about a person's subjectivity toward a text hat determines if they believe it to be true or false. But in the end, it is up to ourselves to personally decide what is real and what is fake.
